The Puzzle Quilt
with Paula Nadelstern
Paula has
developed a simple way for us to learn her
theories about fabric, developed over twenty
years of making complex quilts: Puzzle
Quilts. By using different fabric
combinations in this sampler quilt, an
illusion is created that each block is
unique. The puzzle is to pick which two are
the same! In this two-day class, you will
learn about design and create unexpected
results from your fabrics.
Supply List &
Fabric Requirements
A complete supply list will be provided
to you upon confirmation of your
registration or you can see a complete

Needle Stars with
Paula Nadelstern
In this one-day
class, you will learn Paula’s machine
piecing and template techniques to make a
simple 4-patch block that looks like a
complicated pinwheel. Needle Stars depend on
using a fabric with designs that can be
divided into identical halves by a line
passing through the center; this is
bilateral symmetry, which can be found in
many fabrics, including those she designs.

Portrait Quilts by Amy Armenta

Friday, April 1st, 12:30pm

Create a
memorable portrait of a loved one
using pigment inks. Painting with
pigment inks is like coloring in a
coloring book, only this is on
fabric which will then be quilted.
The most important part of a
portrait is color. We will learn how
to use these quick-drying inks to
paint faces. This method is becoming
a favorable form of art among
quilters. Be the change you wish to
see.

Hoffman Challenge started with 94
enthusiastic quilters. The numbers of
entries have grown to more than 700. While
the majority of the entries come from the
United States, a wide variety of
international entries is received. Each
year, the top entries are grouped into
traveling collections that travel in the US

to be a premiere traveling quilt collection.

Trunk Show: Beckie Fry
Beckie began
quilting in 1990 completely by accident. She
received her degree in home economics in
1978 and even though she was an accomplished
seamstress she had never quilted. She would
give her fabric scraps to her husband’s
grandmother, Emma, who would cut them into
shapes and sew them together. Beckie really
did not see much value in Emma’s activity
other than that it kept her busy.
After Emma
died Beckie’s mother-in-law gave her a top
that Emma had pieced for her. The top was
stored in a closet until the family moved
into a new home in 1990 and Beckie found the
top. She decided to get it quilted by the
local senior citizen ladies. When Beckie
went to pick up the quilt the lady unfolded
it and Beckie promptly told her that it
wasn’t her quilt. Her quilt was not that
pretty. Then she looked closer. There was
her high school graduation dress fabric and
fabric from the place mats she had made.
That was her quilt and it was beautiful!
After that
Beckie was a woman on a mission. She taught
herself to quilt. The Ogallala Quilters’
Society was formed. She took some classes
the very first year and her quilting efforts
totally exploded. She loves color, and lots
of it. She loves sharp points and circles,
miniatures, appliqué and fabric. Beckie just
loves to quilt! |

Featured Guild: Pecos
Valley Quilters, Roswell, NM
Pecos Valley
Quilters Guild of Roswell began in February,
1983 with 34 members. Today there are over
100 members and 8 of the original members
still attend on a regular basis. Members
come from Roswell, Artesia, Ruidoso and
Plainview, Texas. The mission of the Guild
is to further the art of quilting and quilt
making in its many forms. The Guild meets
every Wednesday at the Roswell Adult Center,
807 North Missouri Avenue, and membership is
open to everyone. The first Wednesday of
each month is the business meeting. The
Guild offers monthly classes taught by the
Guild’s members and visiting teachers. There
are challenges every year, a block of the
month, round robins, and a strong art quilt
group. Our community charity is Quilts from
the Heart. Members piece, quilt and donate
completed quilts to the local shelter for
battered adults, CASA, and the Assurance
Home for teens. The group hosts a major
quilt show in even years at the Roswell
Civic Center. The 2010 show featured over
235 quilts. |

Feature Teacher
- Paula Nadelstern |
 |
Kaleidoscope,
the very word promises surprise and magic,
change and chance. Paula Nadelstern’s goal
is to harmoniously integrate the idea of a
kaleidoscope with the techniques and
materials of quilt making. She tries to free
herself from a conventional sense of fabric
orderliness.
Paula makes
quilts on the same block in the Bronx where
she grew up. Being a New Yorker wrapped up
in the fabric of city life creates an
inherent paradox contrasting the traditional
image of quilt making as part of a simple,
make-do, rural way of life with her own
complex urban-shaped space.
For over twenty
years, her work space in their two bedroom
apartment was the forty-inch round kitchen
table. A long distance view, alternate
space, or not making quilts were not
options. She believes this reality merged
with her personality and passion for fabric
in shaping the direction of her
kaleidoscopic piecework, causing her to rely
on intricate detail and inherent symmetry,
and to invent a shape that makes the most of
limited space.
Paula
Nadelstern’s quilts have been exhibited
internationally. The American Folk Art
Museum’s first one person exhibition
highlighting the work of a contemporary
quilt artist featured her work in 2009. One
of her quilts was included in the “Twentieth
Century’s 100 Best American Quilts” exhibit.
She travels extensively teaching the
kaleidoscopic quilt making techniques and
design concepts explored in her books,
Kaleidoscopes & Quilts, Snowflakes & Quilts
and Puzzle Quilts: Simple Blocks, Complex
Fabric, and the newest Kaleidoscope Quilts:
The Workbook. In addition, she designs
textile prints exclusively for Benartex,
Inc. |

Show Judge -
Valerie Boman |
|
OQS welcomes
Valerie Boman to judge the 2011 quilt
entries. Valerie was raised in western
Montana, then after spending ten years in
Florida, she moved to Arizona. Since 1984,
her home has been in Chandler, Arizona.
Valerie is a
National Quilt Association certified quilt
judge and qualified to judge Masterpiece
quilts. She owns two quilting related
businesses. One is a longarm
machine-quilting business and the other is
White Picket Fence Quilts, a pattern company
that includes pieced, appliquéd and
embroidered quilts that she has designed. In
addition, she has five books that have been
published.
Aside from
quilting, her hobbies include gardening,
canning, home decorating, genealogy,
camping, birding and Geo-caching. Plus, she
belongs to several local groups that play a
number of card games. Obviously, she loves
being busy and experiencing and learning new
things. Welcome…. Valerie Boman! |
